Editor’s Comment: Time for the councillors to deliver their promises over political hot potato

In these times of austerity, and a tight rein on public spending, the idea was always going to be mired in controversy.

It also became a political hot potato during the recent local elections, as opponents of the Conservative-led council were critical of the move.

The council has maintained throughout this exercise that ultimately the new building will save money, as staff will be centred in one building, rather than scattered across four sites in town.

They believe there will be efficiency savings straight away, and in the years to come.

There is also the bonus of creating jobs and giving a boost to the economy by converting the old offices into a town centre hotel - which seems the likeliest option for Crescent Gardens.

So the challenge now for the councillors is delivering on what they have promised in terms of long term saving, as well as being very transparent and accountable during the process to their council tax payers.
