Talking Politics: I do value the need to belong

I surprised myself by watching the announcement of the declaration of the new Pope live on television (with my mum).

I’m not Catholic and I’m not often drawn to such pomp, but there is a fascination for many people in ritual ceremonies like this. It says something, I think, about who we are and being human. The council has a number of formal ceremonies such as Annual Council and Mayor-making. I’ve attended and taken delight in services at Halifax Minster. And I enjoy (not always uncritically) the Leader’s speech at the end of my Party Conference. Perhaps there are times when no matter how much of a rebel I’d like to be, in the end, I do value need to belong and to be part of something!
