'˜Our little town has done us proud' - crowds turn out in memory of Alex Steele after tragic death

The 28-year-old died on October 13 after battling depression.

He had had only recently set up his own joinery business and worked at architectural antiques firm Andy Thornton, West Vale, for a number of years.

A special event was organised at Elland Cricket Club to raise funds to help Alex’s family cover his funeral expenses.

A charity football tournament, auction and family fun day were held and organisers said they were delighted with how the day had gone.

Lee Goodall wrote: “Wow, just wow. What can I say, yesterday was absolutely fantastic. Thanks to everybody that came to support Alex’s big day, also a massive thank you to everybody that donated raffle prizes and auction prizes.

“We really appreciate what you gave us - our little town have done us proud.”

Local celebrity runner and mental health campaigner Mush Cade went along after completing a mammoth running challenge in memory of Alex.

Supporters of Andy’s Man Club were also in attendance. The group was set up by Halifax RLFC player Luke Ambler after the death of his brother-in-law Andrew.

It now works to provide men with a space to talk about their mental health and raise awareness, alongside Twitter campaign #ItsOkToTalk
