Our year in focus at 1,000 image exhibition

And as the images featured in the After Alice Project’s exhibition at Salem Community Centre, Salem Mill, Hebden Bridge - it’s just behind the Co-op store on Market Street - are all of people and places in the Calder Valley, then it promises to be an intriguing story.

After Alice is a community project dedicated to reviving the arts of film photography and in both colour and traditional black and white, these professionally printed 5” x 7” photographs have all been taken by project members and tell the story of the towns and villages of the upper Calder Valley in 2015.

The exhibition opens on Friday, December 11, and also runs on Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13, from 11am to 4pm each day. It is free to see but donations will be welcome and the pictures will be available to buy at a very special price.

A spokesperson said: “In them you will find the faces and places you know, so why not come down to see if you can find them?

“You never know, but you might even spot yourself! Did we capture you in the street, at work, at play?

“Here too will be the buildings you love and stunning, familiar landscapes you might take for granted, alongside dozens of events both big and small, parades, protests, performances, shops, businesses, races, characters and competitions - in short, all of the noise and bustle, and all of the moments of stillness to be found in everyday life.”

He went on to say that every single photo will be available to buy for the cheap price of just £2, a personal and original piece of art. Each photograph will be dated and numbered, and carries the official After Alice stamp.

“These could very well become future collector’s items, after all, images by the likes of Fay Godwin and Martin Parr are amongst the most famous British photographs.

“At the very least you will be helping the project raise funds to capture the stories, events and faces of 2016.”

There will also be slideshows and an exhibition of vintage and quirky cameras through the ages, presented by local enthusiast Phil Vaughn, and some of the exhibits will be for sale.

“And if you thought 3D photography was something new, think again! After Alice will have a display of Victorian and contemporary stereoscopic images and will be selling both these trick photographs and the viewers needed to make them come alive!” he said.

Joining After Alice - named after the famous Hebden Bridge photographer Alice Longstaff - will be the Pennine Heritage Digital Archive with their own Christmas shop and a hand-picked slideshow of vintage images from the original Alice Longstaff Collection. On Sunday, there will also be performances of the Hebden Bridge Community Drum Circle to close the weekend. Refreshments will be available at the Mill Cafe through the weekend.
