TWO new fire bosses have started work in Calderdale.
Andrew Crowther has become station commander for Brighouse and Elland and John Webster is the new station commander for Halifax.
Both are returning to Calderdale from working in other parts of West Yorkshire and say they are pleased to be back in this district doing a job they enjoy.
“You never know what you’re going to be doing each day in this job,” said Station Commander Webster.
Station Commander Crowther and Station Commander Webster both joined the fire service 26 years ago.
Station Commander Crowther is a technical rescue officer while Station Commander Webster is a wildfire expert.
Already they have been tasked with dealing with some huge fires including the recent moor blazes at Ovenden Moor near Ogden in Halifax and Cold Edge Road in Wainstalls.
Station Commander Crowther said the incredibly dry conditions, the strong winds and terrain of the Wainstalls fire meant it was one of the most severe he had ever seen.
The blaze lasted several days and, when the wind suddenly changed direction, forced crews to keep moving.
