Pedal to the metal for volunteers

Crowds turned out for the launch of the '˜Grand Old Duke Challenge' to raise money for charity.

Hosted by Blazing Saddles bike shop and Craggies Cafe, Cragg Vale Business Park, the challenge is raising funds for volunteers who provide free tea and biscuits to blood cancer patients at St James’s Hospital, Leeds. Those taking part set off in all directions to do some serious marching up and down the hills of Calderdale. Fell runners, mountain bikers, walkers and triathletes took on a number of personal challenges.

But, the ‘I am the Duke’ title went to Phil Scarf, who biked up the Cragg Road climb, swam across Gaddings Dam and back, before biking on to Mankinholes, ran up and down Stoodley Pike before heading back to base to be the only competitor to complete the full challenge in two hours and 24 minutes.
