The #TakeTheKnee protest, with campaigners using masks and social distancing, took place at Halifax Town Hall this week, one of a number of events taking place up and down the country with organisers saying the aim was to show solidarity with George Floyd, whose death in America during police custody sparked global demonstrations.

Labour councillors Jenny Lynn (Park), Helen Rivron (Ovenden), Roisin Cavanagh (Luddenden Foot) and Audrey Smith (Sowerby Bridge) attended the event and organisers added that Halifax MP Holly Lynch was unable to attend but offered her full support.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “The high numbers of deaths of black people in police custody, the mistreatment of the Windrush generation, the disproportionate impact of coronavirus on BAME communities and the absence of Black history in school curricula show that there are big structural problems when it comes to racism in the UK.

“We can and must do better.

“This means ending deaths of black people in police custody, calling for a public and independent inquiry into Covid-19 impact on BAME people, delivering real justice for the Windrush generation and Grenfell community and to teach Black History in schools.”
