Mrs Brookes said: "Home deliveries have gone up by 25 percent, so logistically it’s been a challenge.

“I don’t feel like a hero - it’s my shop and I’m just doing a job for my community."

At the heart of the village’s Covid response, Mrs Brookes, who took over the post office six years ago, has been described as going 'above and beyond her normal duties' to ensure everyone is well provided for.

Mrs Brookes said despite the pandemic, she is 50 percent busier compared to last year, which she believes is done to an increase of online business users.

"One business sent me 100 parcels to send off in a single day - I think to survive this year, it's been about adapting," she said.

"I'd like to say thank you to the Calder Valley community for supporting us during the pandemic.

"I'd implore people to use small businesses when society returns to some sort of normality - because they're the traders which are going to need the most help.

Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mrs Brookes has extended opening hours and been running the Post Office seven days a week, ensuring customers and community members alike are offered encouragement, a chat, a listening ear and a friendly face.

The Mayor of Hebden Royd, Val Stevens, started the awards as a way to recognise those going above and beyond for their community during the ongoing pandemic.

The awards offer residents the chance to say thank you to all the unsung local heroes and to recognise their extraordinary efforts since the pandemic began.

Mayor Val Stevens said: "This year had been difficult for everyone, and we know the restrictions may continue for longer into next year.

"That's why the Town Council would like to thank those people who are sometimes not noticed who have been making lives just a little more bearable for the rest of us."
