After many fundraising events for 2020 were cancelled, the Cancer Research UK Todmorden committee had to think of other ways to raise much needed funds.

Annette Shann, from Mytholmroyd, a relative of a committee member, had the idea to put her sewing skills to good use and make masks for the committee to sell.

Then, a friend asked Annette to make one for her with a plastic insert mouthpiece, so that people could lipread and see the wearer’s smile. Word got round, and soon many of the committee were involved in cutting out, ironing, threading elastic, sewing, packing and posting.

So far the masks have raised more than £9,500 for Cancer Research UK and with face masks being essential to day to day life it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

The smile masks are priced at £8 each, £14 for two, and are available for adults and children and are suitable for hearing aid wearers. Orders can be placed through the e-mail address [email protected] - post and packaging is £2 per order.

When ordering make sure to supply your name and address and ages of children.
