Ee By Gum - Yorkshire accent voted one of t’ nation’s favourites

Described as ‘warm’ and ‘genuine’, the Yorkshire accent and dialect - often associated with stars including cricket pundit Geoffrey Boycott, who lives in Boston Spa, and Girl’s Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh, came second in the survey.

Sith thee, Ee By Gum, Put Wood in th’ole, Chuffed and Ey Up are just some of the popular phrases included in a new Travelodge ‘Lingo Guide’ to the accent.

Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge spokeswoman, said: “We’re very lucky to have such a rich diversity of regional dialects and languages spoken across the UK.

“However our research shows that we’re unaware of many dialects, so we are calling on people to get up and go to learn more about them, and we have developed a set of guides to help with that.

“The beauty of the UK is that you can travel a short way from home to experience very different regional dialects, and our guides have been designed to help people do that.”

Topping the list was the Geordie accent - spoken by Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Ant & Dec. The accent was described as ‘upbeat’ and ‘friendly’.

And at the other end of the scale the Essex accent topped the list of the least favourite accents and dialects, closely followed by the Birmingham and Cockney accents.
