Family thank rescuers who came to aid of man after Halifax car crash

The family of a former driving instructor who collapsed at the wheel of his car have thanked rescuers who came to his aid.

The 73-year-old man, who has not been named, was driving a Renault Captur in Keighley Road, Halifax, just before 9am on Tuesday when the accident happened.

The out-of-control car then struck a man out for a run. The driver is fighting for his life in hospital but the runner escaped with minor injuries.

It is understood a woman in the car helped make the stricken vehicle safe as passers-by rushed to help.

A former firefighter, named on Facebook as Dave Robertshaw, administered CPR until paramedics arrived. The road was closed for some time.

The driver was today (Wed) said to be in a “critical” condition in intensive care.

His niece Lucy Dawson said the family were very grateful to everyone who had helped.

Posting on Facebook, she said: “I would like to thank people who stopped to help and resuscitated my uncle who had collapsed at the wheel.”

West Yorkshire Police have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forward.
