FC Halifax Town fan Charlie’s big day cancelled due to coronavirus outbreak

Charlie Potts, 11, from Greetland, was due to be a mascot at Town’s home game with Wrexham on Saturday, which his mum Lucy had bought his for his birthday, which was on Friday.

“He looks forward to every game, he absolutely loves it,” she said.

“He’s in a wheelchair, he has cerebral palsy, so he doesn’t run around and play like all his friends.

“We’ve only just started going to the games religiously this season.

“I was going to surprise him with the mascot present on his birthday but then obviously it all got cancelled.

“But he’s had so many videos from people on Twitter and a few have been from players saying once this is all over, he can come and be a mascot at their clubs.

“I did a poem in his card saying what I’d planned but that once it’s all up and running he will be a mascot.”

After Lucy appealed for video messages to Charlie on Twitter, current captain Matty Brown, former Town striker Geoff Horsfield and Manchester United captain Harry Maguire were among those to reply.

Lucy says she will be speaking to FC Halifax Town to try and rearrange Charlie’s mascot day.

“Because he can’t play football with his friends he needs something he can be a part of, and when he’s there watching the team, he feels part of something bigger,” she said.

“He loves the atmosphere, seeing the players, chanting along.

“As long as they win, then it’s a good day.”
