Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival

Beauty and allure smothered Hebden Bridge in a three-day Burlesque Festival weekend.

There was a musical start with cabaret at the town’s Crown Inn featuring live swing, jazz and rock from artists Kiki Deville and the Cadillacs and supported by vintage songbird, singer-songwriter Ruby Macintosh.

Saturday was sketchy - the world’s premier alternative drawing movement, Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art school, founded in a Brooklyn bar, brought life drawing, with laughter and wine to the event.

Meanwhile the Hebden Bridge Little Theatre, shone with glamour as burlesque dancers from across the UK battled it out to be crowned queen in the Legend in the Making, newcomer’s competition - hosted by festival organiser Heidi Bang Tidy.

The winning performance was awarded to Titsalina from Gloucestershire.

Entrants included Heather Davey, 51, of Mytholmroyd, who performed on stage for the third time since beginning burlesque dancing, last year.

On Saturday night the darker side of burlesque was celebrated with a concert featuring dancers including Lady Wildflower and Marnie Scarlet at the Little Theatre in a show hosted by Joe Black.

The final day offered a festival market with home-made cakes and scones as well as coffee and teas at the Burlesque Bazaar at Hebden Bridge Town Hall.

Vintage clothes, shoes, accessories and jewellery, as well as a pop-up pin-up make-up stall where people were pampered by Bethany Jane Davies, a vintage hair and make-up artist.

Angelina Mitrovic, stall holder of clothes label Rubens Muse, specialising in plus sizes, said: “It’s been great - there’s been a good variety of people who have all enjoyed some fabulous entertainment.”

Sunday’s closing gala evening dazzled audiences with performances from world-star Eliza Delite, La Loco, Heidi Bang Tidy, and Lady Wildflower.

Heidi Bang Tidy said: “The talent was outstanding. This was Hebden Bridge’s first burlesque festival.

“We will definitely do it again but only next year it will be bigger - as all shows were sold out in advance.”
