Hebden Bridge choir performs Christmas carols from car park

‘Sing All Ye Citizens’, a Hebden Bridge choir who managed to form, rehearse, and perform all in the space of three weeks, has brought joy to singers and audiences alike over the festive period.

Brain-child of Musical Director Liz Powers and Choral Arranger Alison Crutchley, the Sing All Ye Citizens project overcame countless challenges and restrictions by rehearsing and performing in a car park, and their 23 singers brought tears to the eyes of a small socially-distanced audience on Saturday, December 19 with their beautiful a cappella harmonies. Audience members called the performance ‘exquisite’, ‘extraordinary’, and ‘sacred’.

Following the performance, the choir climbed the hill to Heptonstall where they sang again by candlelight, under the stars, in the ruins of St Thomas a Becket.

Director Liz Powers said: “Singing together in harmony is the best way I know to have an immediate positive impact on people’s mental health. The choral community are finding safe ways to sing, and I’m so thrilled … we need this now more than ever.”
