Help make this month ‘Bobble Hat February’ for Overgate Hospice

The ‘Bobble Hat February’ idea came to the Richardson family while their dad John was in hospital last winter. The Richardson’s had been visiting John regularly and the staff at the hospital soon noticed their love for bobble hats.

When John was moved to Overgate Hospice, Elland, the staff there soon noticed their colourful headwear.

John’s son Mark said, “Every day, no matter the time, we were always welcomed by all the Hospice staff with warmth and love. “What hats have we got on today?” “Here comes the bobble hat family” the doctors and nurses would say to us when we walked through the door. It always made us smile, which was just what we needed at such a sad time.

“The whole team at Overgate treated my dad with dignity and respect, and cared for him as if he was a member of their own family.

“Being at the Hospice meant that we were able to take our dad outside to spend time with him and family could visit him whenever they wanted to.

“Losing Dad was incredibly hard but Overgate made our last moments together special and we can’t thank them enough.

“We knew we wanted to start fundraising for Overgate! My brother Andy has made and sold wooden reindeer, donating one to the Hospice where it spent Christmas.

“We came up with lots of ideas but the one that we had to go with was Bobble Hat February!

“Fundraising has always been a big part of our family. Our lovely mum Esther was always fundraising. She was our hero and inspired us to fundraise as we were growing up and myself and siblings carried that on into our adult lives and we now encourage our families to do the same.

“We are asking our friends, family and Overgate supporters to join us in wearing bobble hats in February.”
