This is how Calderdale is planning to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day

The COVID-19 crisis is limiting group commemorations for a key anniversary, but it will be marked by Calderdale Council in other ways.

With large gatherings prohibited because of the coronavirus pandemic, the council has found a way to honour VE Day, which this year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Additionally, the Royal British Legion is also urging people to mark the occasion with events the nation can join in even if they cannot get together.

A first event to mark the anniversary has been arranged and more will follow, said the Leader of Calderdale Council, Coun Tim Swift.

Coun Swift said: “Friday, May 8, is the 75th anniversary of VE Day, which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe.

“Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus restrictions, most VE Day 75 events and street parties have had to be cancelled or postponed.

“However, I know people in Calderdale will still do all they can to mark the occasion and honour the men and women who fought for the freedom we enjoy today,” he said.

Coun Swift (Lab, Town) said the council was planning commemorations for the VE Day anniversary despite the current situation.

“Although our museums may be closed, staff have been working hard to prepare an online mini-exhibition which will virtually showcase one object per day from our collections, all related to the Second World War in Calderdale.

“Images of the items will be posted at 11am each day from Saturday, May 2, up to the anniversary, from the @BankfieldMuseum twitter account.

“On Friday, May 8, a new web page will launch with all the photos and further information about each object.

“Additional ways to mark this important anniversary are being confirmed – keep an eye on the council’s social media accounts for updates and more information,” he said.

And reflecting on the original VE Day in 1945 could help at this time, said Coun Swift.

“Whilst plans across the country may not be the social events perhaps expected, commemorating those who gave so much with a period of reflection, may help us to better deal with our own challenges at this difficult time,” he said.

Coun Swift said there were also lots of ideas about how to get involved, whilst following social distancing measures, at https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/remembrance/remembrance-events/ve-day-75 – the Royal British Legion’s website.
