A star baker spent more than 50 hours perfecting a life size edible panda emporium to impress his girlfriend at a national cake show.

Robert Firth, 26, of Greetland, decided to enter the Cake International weekend in Manchester after he impressed judges at last year’s competition with a cake version of Freddie Krueger.

The part-time baker, who works at Dobson’s Sweet Factory full-time, made the three-and-a-half-foot cake completely out of rice krispies, butter and marshmallows.

“I was looking for inspiration for the competition because it was a last minute decision but my girlfriend loves pandas so I thought that I would try to impress her with the creation I made,” Robert said.

“She was speechless when she saw the cake.”

The cake placed bronze in the large cake category, while his cupcakes got gold overall for their category.

The cupcakes detailed a pond with lily pads floating around and frogs and dragonflys sitting on top.

“When I found out, I was very surprised especially about the cupcakes,” said Robert.

“I was so happy.”
