Lights Out to mark WWI fallen soldiers

People across Calderdale will pay their respects to the fallen soldiers of World War I.

August 4, 2014, marks 100 years since England declared war on Germany.

Thousands of homes are expected to take part in the Lights Out commemoration - a Royal British Legion campaign encouraging people to turn off their lights between 10-11pm, leaving on a single light or candle in a nationwide symbolic act of reflection.

Lights will be turned off at Halifax Town Hall and a candle will illuminate its Book of Remembrance which records local men who lost their lives in battle.

Bankfield Museum, Boothtown, is exhibiting wartime stories of local people. The exhibition opens August 2.

On August 2, Stainland Memorial Park will unveil a permanent memorial which will be officially opened by the Mayor of Calderdale Pat Allen.

On August 3, St Bernard’s Church, Range Lane, Boothtown, is hosting a special service to mark the outbreak of the First World War.

Fields in Trust charity and The Royal British Legion are encouraging landowners to dedicate green spaces as Centenary Fields.

Calderdale Council and the War Memorials Trust has maintained all 28 memorials across the borough.
