The dogs were discovered in a lay-by on Moselden Lane, off Oldham Road, Rishworth at about 7.30am on Monday 10 August.

RSPCA inspector Emma Brook said: “These dogs were extremely matted, and covered in faeces.

“The mats were like dreadlocks, and they smelled strongly of ammonia.

“One of the dogs was reluctant to walk as the matting was so tight on his back legs, so I don’t think it’s possible that they got to this location on their own.”

An animal-lover initially took them to the vets, from where the charity collected them and took them to RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital in Salford.

Emma said: “It took two vets over two hours to dematt them, using scissors to cut through the mats as clippers couldn’t.

“Thankfully, when the fur was gone vets found them to be in good body condition and healthy.

“If anyone has any information about who they belong to please call the RSPCA appeal line on 0300 123 8018 and ask to leave a message for me.”

The dogs - who have been named Frankie (pictured in red harness after) and Benny (pictured before and in tropical harness after) - are now being cared for at RSPCA Leeds, Wakefield & District branch animal centre.

Lucy Asquith, animal care assistant at the centre, said: “They are very sweet little boys. “They are a little bit nervous and quite attached to each other.

“It’s very early days but we expect to be looking for a home for them together.”
