Derek, 82, came to Calderdale in the late 1970’s with his wife Diane, to continue his career in production engineering which culminated with them creating their own engineering company in 1980.

Due to ill health, they retired in 1996, Derek having been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

In the last four years this has manifested itself in leg mobility problems, meaning he needs a four wheeled walking aid, which is a major contributor to maintaining mobility.

This has enabled Derek to participate, along with friends, family and members of The Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge, in the “Move the Calderdale Way” challenge to show that physical disability need not inhibit achieving your goals.

Hazel Brindle, from the Rotary Club, said: “Derek believes passionately in the ethos of Rotary and is committed to helping the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge achieve its vision, which is to see a world where people unite and create lasting change across the globe in our community and in ourselves and to strengthen the club by maximising our impact in the local community, nationally and internationally.

“Derek finds it very difficult walking these days but he was determined to support the club in this challenge - so, armed with his trusty buggy he religiously walks up and down the lane outside his home each day.

“He may not clock up a large number of miles as some of our younger members will, but he more than makes up for it in his determination to support the club.

“I have known Derek for 20 years or so. He introduced me into the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge, he has been my mentor ever since giving me sound advice and guidance.

“I find him a truly amazing person.”
