Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco statements to Calderdale public on panic buying

Supermarket giants have provided a mixed response to fears of panic buying as the UK attempts to curve entering a second lockdown due to a national spike in coronavirus cases.

Big food chains such as Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have stores throughout Calderdale, which all saw members of the public resort to panic buying as the country descended into coronavirus lockdown on March 23.

Calderdale Council have also asked the public not to panic buy in light of a possible second wave of coronavirus.

A Morrisons spokeswoman said: “We’re introducing a limit on a small number of key products, such as toilet roll and disinfectant.

"Our stock levels of these products are good, but we want to ensure that they are available for everyone.”

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “We are not currently restricting products.

Customers can continue to shop safely and with confidence in our stores, where they will see we have good availability.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “We have good availability, with plenty of stock to go round, and we would encourage our customers to shop as normal.

"To ensure that everyone can keep buying what they need, we have introduced bulk-buy limits on a small number of products.

“To help our customers shop safely, we will also have colleagues at the entrances of our larger stores to remind customers about the safety measures we have in place, including the legal requirement to wear a face covering.”

Jane Scullion, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategy, said: “Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic we’ve been proud of how Calderdale people have stuck together and helped each other through this tough time.

“We all have a part to play in ensuring that everyone can get the essential items they need, especially those who are most at risk or isolated.

“We urge people not to overbuy items – there is plenty to go around if we all buy our fair share.

“We are providing extra support to vulnerable residents if they need it during the pandemic."
