The charity were still in the process of reopening their shops following initial closures in April but have again been forced to close all 14 shops across Calderdale as the latest tough measures to combat coronavirus were introduced today.

Pearl Hammond, manager of the Hipperholme shop, said; “We are so disappointed to be closing our doors again, especially at this time of year when we would usually be preparing for the busy festive season. I can only hope that this second closure won’t be for long and that we will be welcoming our customers again soon.”

The closures come just a week after the hospice announced that one of their two charity shops in Hebden Bridge will close permanently.

Tracey Broadbent, Head of Retail at Overgate Hospice, said; “The past few weeks have been difficult for our retail team, however we are doing all we can to remain positive. I am so proud of our staff and volunteers for the amazing efforts they made to reopen our shops whilst keeping everyone safe. To have to close again, especially at this time of year, is extremely disappointing to us all, however we recognise the importance of the new measures and know that our wonderful customers will be ready to support us as soon we are safely able to open our doors again.”

The new restrictions come at a time that is usually vital to fundraising efforts, and the community is being called on to support the Elland-based hospice however they can.

Overgate has been at the heart of the Calderdale community for over 35 years and aim to try and improve the quality of life for their patients and help them to live life to the full, to the very end by offering specialist palliative care, comfort and support, free of charge, to patients and their families.

Laura Golding, Director of Income Generation, said; “In the coming four weeks we expect to lose a further £100,000 in income from our shops, and the lockdown will also have a huge impact on the events and campaigns that our fundraising team have been working so hard to organise.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support of the community since the pandemic began, but we are calling on you again to help us get through the coming hardship.

“We know that for so many, this is a time of financial uncertainty but if you are able to help, your support will mean so much for the families in our care.

“Whether you visit our online shop, join our lottery or share our posts on social media, we are grateful for every show of support we receive.”
