Sir Tom’s funeral takes place on Saturday, and Brigadier Andrew Meek wants all members of the association to pay their respects to a fellow former member of the Dukes.

He said: “Captain Tom not only raised a huge amount for the NHS during the early stages of the pandemic but, as one of the last of his generation of World War Two soldiers, gave hope to the whole country with his simple, dignified message that ‘tomorrow will be a better day.’

“For all of us who have served in The Dukes he reflected to the country, and the world beyond, the best qualities of our Regiment and our home county.

“Through this. he raised the stature of the Regiment in the eyes of the nation in a manner none of us could have imagined.

“Thus I felt that one way in which all of us in the Regimental Association could mark his passing would be to wear the Regimental tie and blazer during Saturday.

“This will demonstrate that the Regiment lives on and supports Tom’s message of hope.”
