Success continues to bloom in awards

Among the top performers were Old Earth Primary School in Elland who were crowned the winners in the Harrogate Flower Show Young Peoples Award category.

The judges said: “Gardening is seamlessly integrated into the curriculum, there is an after school club and the harvested crops are used in the school kitchen.

“We were impressed by the knowledge of the pupils and the innovative projects such as the information posters on the bee-friendly beds, the tomatoes grown in a greenhouse made from plastic bottles, companion planting, recycling and the environmentally friendly ethos of the school.”

Woolshops Shopping centre triumphed in the shopping centres and retail park section. The centre was praised for its colourful hanging baskets and the well planted perennial borders and the environmental management at the centre is commendable.

Halifax as a whole also won the large Town/small city category. Judges said: “Halifax looks cheerful with its many colourful hanging baskets, tubs and railing planters. Both public and private areas are well planted and maintained.

“We saw evidence of some excellent and innovative gardening practices in the Godfrey Road Allotments and Ravenscliffe Secondary Special School. Manor Heath demonstration gardens and Albert Park had good displays.

Ripponden was presented with a gold award in the large village section while Todmorden was given a silver gilt in the town category.

In the public and private charitable establishments categories, Overgate Hospice and The Memorial Garden, Centre Vale Park, Todmorden, were awarded a gold mark.

Clayhouse Park in West Vale earned a silver gilt and the Friends of Sowerby Bridge Railway Station was given a gold award in the open spaces section. In the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood category the following groups were given these awards.
