Top award for Halifax chemist

Science can be taught in a number of innovative ways, but one teachers creativity and love for science has earnt her a prestigious scientific award.

Dr Kirsty Turner, born in Halifax, who works at Bolton School Boys’ Division, is the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools Education Award winner for 2017.

She is also an academic and chemistry education researcher working mainly on improving the transition between school and university for chemistry students. In her research work she designs creative ways of improving the students understanding of chemistry.

She said: “I am incredibly honoured to receive this award which highlights the value of the classroom teacher for chemistry students.

“The day-to- day experience of chemistry students at all levels, linked of course to their teachers, is a huge factor in maintaining the pipeline of talent into the chemical sciences.”

The award is given to a team or a teacher alone who has demonstrated an exceptional ability to teach chemistry and inspire students at pre-university level, for a prolonged period or a large impact in a short amount of time.

Dr Robert Parker, the chief executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry said “It is an honour to celebrate the innovation and expertise of our community through our prizes and awards.

“Chemistry is a powerful force for good,” he added.
