"With your help, we can make it complete" - Overgate calls for one last show of support in Big Build Appeal

Overgate Hospice is calling on the community for one last show of support for its Big Build Appeal to help create beautiful, therapeutic gardens for patients and their families.

Sandra Bowles, a staff nurse at Overgate Hospice, has seen first-hand the difference that outdoor spaces can make to those receiving care.

“Many of our patients ask if they can go outside, whatever the weather,” she said. “Being outdoors can ease stress, relieve pain, and bring a sense of normality at a difficult time.

"Whether it’s listening to wildlife, smelling flowers, or simply feeling fresh air on their skin, these moments matter enormously.”

The planned gardens will form an integral part of care at the new Hospice facilities, offering peaceful, accessible spaces where patients can rest and spend time with loved ones away from the bedside.

The hospice has already seen a strong response from supporters across Calderdale, with generous donations helping to bring this vision closer to reality. Now, the focus turns to completing the outdoor spaces, ensuring they are as welcoming and loving as the building itself.

Overgate Hospice is inviting support to help fund a range of features. Such as patient garden planters giving individuals and their loved ones a private, colourful space to enjoy. Or the Remembrance Garden, a quiet, secluded space for families and friends to come back and remember the special moments they had with their loved one at the hospice.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of our community,” Sandra added. “If you’ve already contributed, thank you. Your generosity means so much to all of us and to the people we care for. If you’re still considering supporting us, we would be so grateful if you could take a moment to see what we’re trying to achieve and help in any way you can.”

You can find out more about funding specific garden features, and how you can be part of bringing them to life, on the Overgate Hospice website.

“This is your Hospice,” Sandra said. “It belongs to the people of Calderdale. Together, we’ve created something truly special, and with your help, we can make it complete.”
