Young Calderdale girl shortlisted for national award

A 10-year-old from Calderdale has been shortlisted for a 2020 Sense Award.

Zoe Bedford, 10, of Kilnhurst Road, Todmorden, has been shortlisted for the Young Sibling of the Year award after being nominated by a member of a member of staff at the charity Sense.

Sense helps those living with complex disabilities including deafness and blindness, and have recognised Zoe's desire to help her disabled and vulnerable sister Rebecca, 21, by selflessly isolating since March this year due to the pandemic.

Her dad, Stefan Bedford said: "She's a little love, they both are.

"When we were told she was shortlisted Zoe said 'Well, I know I'm short'.

"She's so helpful and caring towards Rebecca.

Mr Bedford said Zoe has even stepped up on numerous occasion during lockdown when her sister needs assistance during her daily virtual Zoom calls.

Spokeswoman from Sense, Elisabeth Schuetz said: "The annual Sense Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of people living with complex disabilities, as well as the staff, carers, family members, volunteers, and fundraisers that support them.

"Through the Young Sibling of the Year award, Sense likes to highlight the amazing support siblings provide to their family and more specifically to their disabled brother and sister."

The winners of 2020 Sense Awards will be announced on December 1.
