PHOTO SLIDESHOW: Watch how progress is being made to rebuild flood-hit Elland Bridge

One of the most iconic images of the floods came from Elland, when the historic, Grade II-listed bridge began to collapse.

The force of the floods washed out its foundations and undermined the road above.

The bridge needed to be completely demolished, but work is now well underway on the new, rebuilt, bridge. Stone from the original 1811 bridge has been salvaged and will be used to ensure the bridge retains its historical features.

This week, seven arches, each weighing about 10 tonnes, have been lifted into place to make the new Elland Bridge stronger and more flood resilient.

It’s expected to be open to traffic by the end of the year.
