PICTURES: Fun for all as 61st annual charity gala parades through Halifax

Around 5,000 people braved the wet weather to attend the 61st annual Halifax Charity Gala last weekend.

The event began with the colourful grand procession through the town centre, before making its way to Manor Heath Park.

There, the fun continued with a multitude of activities and attractions, including arena acts hosted by Bristol Street Nissan, including stunt unicyclist Sam Goodburn, 3 Ways gymnastic squad, Bazzmataz dance group, and Halifax RLFC cheerleaders.

Other events included the ever-popular baby show, a Punch and Judy show, and a variety of charity stalls and fairground rides. Ian Warburton, who is co-chairman of the gala, said: “Overall, gate takings were down 43 per cent on last year, which is to be somewhat expected given the poor weather forecast for the day.

“However, there were still good crowds of hardy Yorkshire folk who came out to support us, the charities and other good causes of Calderdale.

“Spirits were not dampened by a small amount of drizzle and given that it was mostly dry during the day, we believe we were fortunate considering the forecast that was given.”

Among those in attendance was the Mayor of Calderdale Ferman Ali , accompanied by Mayoress Shaheen Ali, as well as the Gala Queen herself, Atlanta McBride, who has gained international fame through her success in the Miss International and Miss UK Beautiful competitions.

The earnings from the event go towards a number of good causes, which are represented by various charities that are partnered with the gala, including Cancer Research UK, the Royal British Legion, NHS Blood and Transport, the Samaritans of Halifax and Calderdale, and Guide Dogs for Halifax.

While the final earnings for this year are still currently being calculated, it is expected that the various charities affiliated with the gala have done well due to the high number of pre-event tickets sold, with some outlets having sold out well in advance.
