The Post Office branch would move to the WHSmith store at 5 Market Street, 250 metres from its current site in Commercial Street.

Roger Gale, General Manager of the Post Office Crown Network, said: “We are committed to keeping our services on the high street which we know is hugely important to people. This proposal means we can continue to do that, into the future.

“Our customers will be offered the same range of services, with more convenient and longer opening hours, including Sundays.

“WHSmith already operates 107 Post Office branches from their stores in the UK and we’ve been successfully working with them for nearly ten years. They have a proven record of running Post Offices with consistently high levels of customer service.”

Mr Gale added that the proposal for Halifax Post Office branch would help secure long-term viability of services for local customers.

“We are making sure we take the right action to sustain services for years to come. We must adapt to the changing needs of our customers, who want a convenient and flexible choice of when and how they do business with us – whether that is face to face or on the web.

“We have to adapt so that we can maintain our presence on high streets and in the heart of communities, which we are determined to do,” he said.

The Post Office will be inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the proposed move in a six-week public consultation.

Subject to consultation, the new Halifax Post Office branch will have five serving positions, a mixture of one screened and four open-plan counters.

Post Office opening hours would be 9 – 17.30 Monday to Saturday and 11.00am to 15.00 Sunday. This means Post Office services would be available for a total of 55 hours every week, some 4.5 more than are currently offered.

Existing staff at Halifax’s current branch have the right to transfer their employment to WHSmith if they wish to do so, in line with TUPE legislation.

All options will be discussed with them individually so they can make informed decisions about their future and are supported in those decisions.

The public consultation will end on June 15 2016.

It is proposed the branch would move in September 2016.
