Plight to save Calderdale’s historic churches backed by Bear Grylls

The writer and Chief Scout is calling for people to get involved in Ride+Stride, a sponsored event held by the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust (YHCT) which sees people cycling, walking and driving between churches to raise money for the region’s places of worship.

Taking place on Saturday, September 12, the event includes a route taking in six of the most impressive churches in Calderdale.

All the money raised will be split between the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust and the participant’s church of choice, providing an opportunity to

raise funds to preserve, repair and maintain Yorkshire’s churches, chapels and meeting houses.

As an Ambassador for Ride+Stride, Bear Grylls said: “Many historic churches, chapels and meeting houses are battling to survive. Roofs leak, ancient timbers rot and medieval stonework crumbles.

“Now you can help by joining the Ride+Stride adventure. A sponsored drive, ride or walk, discovering beautiful churches, which also raises money for their repair and preservation.”

David Quick, chairman of the YHCT, said: “There are over 2000 churches in Yorkshire, many of which hold fascinating insights into our heritage and house amazing artefacts and relics, none more so than in West Yorkshire and we are delighted to have put together a route around Calderdale - join us to discover the hidden treasures in this beautiful part of the world.

“This will be a fun day out for all the family, and we’d encourage as many people as possible to get involved.”

Visiting fascinating churches across the borough, the route includes an iconic Minster, two redundant but beautifully preserved churches and a heritage chapel.

All six churches on the route feature a wealth of treasures to be explored, including dazzling stained glass windows, a building inspired by French gothic style and one of Sir George Gilbert Scott’s best works.
