Poison plots rents axed

ALLOTMENT holders at the contaminated Milner Royd plots in Sowerby Bridge will not be charged rent this year.

Earlier this week Calderdale Council told the growers they would face a 25 per cent rise in fees from next year – along with the holders of other plots in Calderdale.

But now Milner Royd rents have been cancelled for 2011.

Last month the growers there were warned not to eat their produce.

Cabinet member Pauline Nash said: “Like all allotment holders, those at Milner Royd will have been working hard on their plots in the hope of enjoying home- grown produce.

“It would be wrong to charge them for their plots.

“This is simply about doing what’s right.”
