Police helicopter in search for stranded walker in Hebden Bridge

The helicopter, which assisted by firefighters from Todmorden, managed to locate the man on Walshaw Dean Lower Reservoir, near Colne Road, at 3.20pm.

The walker, who is in his early-40s, was suffering from exhaustion and mild hypothermia and was treated at the scene by ambulance staff, before being taken to a hotel in Hebden Bridge with the instructions to rest and recuperate..

The walker, who had been undertaking the Pennine Way walk over the last few weeks, had raised the alarm via his mobile phone after getting stuck in boggy ground.

Todmorden watch commander Geoff Shaw said: “He’s become disorientated gone into an area of marshland and got stuck. He didn’t know where he was and couldn’t get out.

The firefighters used an Argocat - an eight wheel drive all terrain vehicle, to rescue the man and drive him to safety after being guided to his location by the police helicopter.

A crew from Cleckheaton with a technical rescue vehicle also attended. The crews left at 4.15pm.

Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team did get a call from the police and ambulance services but were stood down as fire crews were already on the scene.
