Police launch operation to clamp down on nuisance bikers across Calderdale

Following complaints from the community in the Upper Valley area, officers took part in a deterrent operation over the weekend to deter illegal bikers around Height Road in Pecket Well and Mount Skip, as well as Rishworth Moor and Gorpley Moor.

Officers were joined by Calderdale Council’s mobile CCTV van, as well as members of the public who were acting as spotters.

Inspector Ben Doughty, from the Calderdale Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are aware of the issues off road bikes have been causing in this area and have been listening to residents’ concerns. We are also aware there are issues in other parts of the district, including the Lower Valleys and Halifax North.

“Not only are the bikes causing a nuisance, they are also a safety risk, especially when they aren’t driven responsibly – as most of them aren’t. They also cause damage to people’s property, often with a cost to the land owner."

Police have pledged prosecuting those involved in the antisocial use of off road bikes will remain a priority following a recent wave of illegal activity.

“I would remind those that think they can ride illegally that they risk having their bike seized, points on their licence and a prosecution," said Inspector Doughty.

“These operations reiterate our commitment to tackling the issue and we will continue to make it tough for those who think it is acceptable to ride off road bikes illegally and dangerously.”

Officers from Calderdale’s off road bike team would continue to encourage anyone who has intelligence about off road biking in their community to contact their local neighbourhood policing team on 101.
