This comes after the district’s local plan documents were thrown out in June 2014, and the council forced to look again at the housing needs of the town.

Current figures estimate that the council will need to build at least 850 houses per year to keep up with demand.

The council has now started work on a new Local Plan which will act as a guide for the future growth of the district up to 2035 and has announced a call for sites, which will start on Monday 15 September so that potential housing sites can be considered and incorporated into this plan.

Interested landowners will need to complete a site submission form, including a map showing the location and precise boundaries. Sites should be large enough for five or more residential dwellings or 500m2 of offices and can be located anywhere within the Harrogate district.Forms and plans should be returned by Friday October 24.

Killinghall Coun Michael Harrison (Con), Cabinet Member for Planning said: “The call for sites is an opportunity for people from across the district to send us details of sites that may potentially be suitable for future development for housing or employment uses.

“Using the suggestions that are received will help the council decide what options may exist to meet housing and employment needs in the future.

“Submitting details of potential land does not guarantee that it will be included in the local plan as there are many things to consider before the final decision about the use of areas of land are made. However, full consideration will be given to every site put forward.”
