Demand for better service at '˜worst connected station in Calderdale'

Campaigning councillors have called for a new bus service in order to improve access to the '˜worst connected station in Calderdale'.

Councillors Adam Wilkinson (Lab, Sowerby Bridge) and Dot Foster (Lab, Sowerby Bridge) have written to First Bus asking them to run certain services via the station in order to improve access for residents.

At present those travelling by public transport face a 1/3 mile walk up hill from the nearest bus stop on West Street to the station.

The councillors have said a new bus stop would be an “easy to achieve and long overdue improvement”, especially for elderly residents.

“An accessible train station is crucial for those who rely on public transport and all residents should be able to easily travel to Leeds, Bradford and Manchester for work and days out” said Coun Foster.

“At present Sowerby Bridge has the worst connected station in Calderdale and probably one of the worst in West Yorkshire.

“A simple solution to this problem would be for certain First buses to call at the station. Station usage has more than doubled at Sowerby Bridge in the last decade and we now need the public transport infrastructure to keep up with this passenger growth” added Councillor Wilkinson.
