The Local Government Secretary also announced the government would convene the cross-Whitehall Flood Recovery Taskforce, including environment, businesses and transport ministers, to provide individual areas with bespoke support and guidance. The first meeting will take place this week.

Leaders of Calderdale Council have reacted to the news on social media about the announcement.

The chief executive of the Council said on Twitter: "Hallelujah! At last. Will make such difference to our 1200 residents & businesses hit so hard by flooding."

Cabinet member for Climate Change and Environment, Coun Scott Patient (Lab, Luddenden Foot) also said on Twitter: "Finally some action from Boris Johnson - a similar package made available like after Boxing Day 2015. This is a good start but we need serious long term investment to tackle climate change for Calderdale."
