Investment in Calderdale to tackle domestic abuse

Calderdale Council has been given a share of £4.5 million to invest in service improvements with other organisations in Yorkshire and Humber.

The announcement by Local Government Minister Kris Hopkins has seen Calderdale, Doncaster, Kirklees, North Lincolnshire, Selby and Sheffield Councils awarded a share of the £89.4 million Transformation Challenge Award for their projects working alongside a range of partners.

The Council working with West Yorkshire Police, Pennine Housing and the NHS locally is awarded £335,000 for its Transforming Domestic Abuse Services project.

It plans to focus on prevention, use digital technology to improve case management, and look at ways to plug gaps in the service.

Kris Hopkins said: “All these councils in Yorkshire and Humber region have shown what can be done to improve the services people get and reduce the costs of public services.

“By working with others, local public bodies are eliminating waste and creating services which help people first time – not services which send people from pillar to post to get problems sorted.”

Kirklees has won £400,000 to work with the police on their Kirklees Cares project where children in care are receiving peer to peer support to prepare them for leaving care.

North Lincs gets £1.9 million for the Connecting Northern Lincolnshire project to establish a shared professional service across North and North East Lincs Councils covering Legal, Finance, IT and Human Resources services, helping to protect frontline services on the way.

Selby Council has £555,000 to work with partner North Yorkshire Council on more collaborative working to delivering services based on needs of local people and finding alternative ways of to deliver them.

Sheffield is awarded just over £1 million and will be working with the Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, the Commissioning Group and Voluntary Action to implement a community-based prevention service to reduce the pressure on the health and care service.

Doncaster Council will work with South Yorkshire Police and St Leger Homes having won £300,000 to review assets across the borough used by the public sector and then reduce occupation costs.
