Petition scheme details to be fixed

Councillors will meet on Monday to discuss plans which will allow the public to petition for a debate by the council.

In August Coun James Baker (Lib Dem, Warley) put forward proposals that if a petition signed by more than 1,000 people is submitted to the council, then the issue will be debated by full council.

Members of the committee have been asked to look at the details of how this scheme will work, including the threshold for triggering a debate at full council; how petitions which fall short are dealt with; how petitions are to be submitted; whether the council should provide e-petition facilities; and whether there should be limitations on what petitions can deal with.

The council is as yet unclear on the financial implications of running and staffing the scheme.
