Princess Anne opens new hospital

Princess Anne to-day officially opened the Calderdale Royal Hospital.

She arrived by helicopter just after 10 am and was welcomed by the chairman of the Calderdale and Hudd-ersfield NHS Trust, Gordon McLean, be-fore being taken to meet some of the patients.

The Princess joined other guests including the Mayor of Calder-dale, Geraldine Carter, and Calderdale's two labour MP's Alice Mahon and Chris McCafferty visited the Elderly Medical Ward and the Accident and Emergency Depart-ment.

She also met one of the new mothers in the maternity suite - Anita Ecclestone, of Elland and her two year old son Alfie.

The hospital which is part of the former Halifax General is owned by Catalyst Healthcare and leased to the NHS.

Before departing, the princess was given a posy by five year old cystic fibrosis patient Hannah Smith.

Tomorrow, she is to visit the Scouts Sailing Centre at Scamm-onden Reservoir which was opened by her mother, the Queen, in 1971.
