HALIFAX’S Serbian community are kicking off 2012 on a high with a visit from royalty.

HRH Princess Katarina Karadjordjevic, pictured, will be a special guest of the Serbian Orthodox Church of St John the Baptist in Halifax.

Her visit on February 4 marks the “Serbian Month in Great Britain 2012.”

She is the second wife of Prince Alexander of the Serbian royal family, the son of King Peter, who opened the church in 1965.

It has been the central point of Serbian faith and culture for generations of Serbs who first settled in Halifax after World War Two.

Church member and Yorkshire-born Serb Vera Stajic said the community was looking forward to welcoming the Princess, who lives in London, and other dignitaries from across Europe.

A church service will be followed by a cultural programme in the community hall including folklore dance, Serbian food and Serbian art.
