£1.5m project to upgrade reservoir starts this month

Improvements are flowing in to a reservoir as part of a £1.5m safety upgrade project.

Work by Yorkshire Water to improve safety at Stubden Reservoir, which supplies water to parts of Mirfield, Morley and Brighouse, will start this month.

The utility firm said the project will take around 12 months to complete and include making improvements to the 145-year-old reservoir’s spillway, which controls the flow of water into the downstream area.

Dave Ellis, Yorkshire Water project manager, said: “We’d like to thank local residents in advance for their patience during this essential safety project.

“Please be assured we’ll do our best to keep disruption to a minimum and hope that residents and visitors will bear with us, as this work will ensure the safety of the reservoir.”

Stubden Reservoir is based near Bradford in Denholme, off Long Causeway.

The planned work is required under the Reservoirs Act 1975, to ensure that the overflow continues to protect the reservoir embankment from flood erosion by safely diverting excess water away from the site.

It is one of the sources of raw water for the utility firm’s Chellow Heights water treatment works, where water is treated before it is supplied to surrounding homes.

Engineering specialists Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) will carry out the work on behalf of Yorkshire Water.

There will be an increase in construction traffic off Main Road, the A629, and into the site but the firm said it is making improvements to the site entrance to minimise impact on roads.

The project also requires the use of a tower crane which will be erected MMB in December, and visible across the landscape because of its height.

MMB will set up its site compound and facilities towards the end of the month.
