Pubs prepare for soccer extravaganza

As the nation prepares for the Euros this summer, it will be a time to take a break and get yourself down to the pub, get a pint, and settle to watch the fixtures unfold.

Lots of bars and pubs around Halifax are preparing themselves for the big event and here is a list of some of the best places to get yourself to and secure your seat in front of the world stage.

First up is The Cat and Fiddle on Cheapside who have already started their celebrations.

Landlord, Dave Frederiksen, says everyone is really excited: “Everyone is really excited here. We have started getting the decorations up and we will be extending our drink offers that usually just run through the day to through the night too.”

The Union Cross on Old Market, one of the oldest in town, is another place that will be broadcasting the football tournament.

Pub landlord Steve Taylor said: “We’ve got flags, bunting and promotions ready for the big event. We’re hoping people will come out and get involved”

The Westgate is already getting their regulars in the mood by having the fixtures up and are preparing to decorate.

Sean Maguire is the licensee at The Westgate and has assured the locals that they will be showing all the games.

A popular watering hole with Halifax’s Irish community is The White Horse who are putting particular emphasis on games involving the Boys in Green and the Three Lions.

Mark Gledhill is the landlord and said: “We will have drink offers, an internal league and a drinks passport. We have a lot of Irish regulars in here so we will be making sure we show both the Irish and England games at least.”

Dee Barlow, licensee at The Old Cock, will be trimming up her pub from top to bottom ready for the kick off.

She said: “We always make sure we do a fantastic job of putting up decorations for any major event and the Euros will be no different.”
