Raising a cuppa for Macmillan coffee morning

Venues across Calderdale will be hosting coffee mornings on today (Friday) for the event which is is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer.

The charity asks people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan.

A woman who lost her husband to cancer shaved her hair off to raise money for the Macmillancharity which helped her family through their darkest hours.

Ruth Buckley, 54, from Sowerby Bridge, was inspired to take on the challenge after losing her husband Andy, 56, to throat cancer.

The couple had only met their Macmillan nurse once before Andy sadly died. It was just five weeks after he had been diagnosed.

Ruth (Pictured) said the support she received from Macmillan, even for that short time, made a huge difference.

She originally set herself a target of raising £500, but she managed to surpass the £1,000 mark as donations from well-wishers and her colleagues at B&M Bargain Stores, Sowerby Bridge, began to flood in.

Her daughter Emma is already planning a challenge for Ruth next year - ideas include a parachute jump or an abseil challenge.
