Record jobless

THE number of people in Calderdale who are out of work and claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance has shot up to 6,558, the highest since 1996.

The total increased in December by 253 and includes 4,500 men and 2,058 women - 5 per cent of the workforce, compared to 3.9 per cent in the country as whole.

There are now 8.5 unemployed people for every vacancy in Calderdale job centres.
