Recycling centre back in action

Two weeks ago the council faced criticism it had not opened by the original target date of early January to allow people to dispose of extra Christmas rubbish and the council said it would be the end of the month.

They have brought that forward to Monday, and Councillor Barry Collins, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for the economy and the environment, said local people would have a “brilliant” recycling centre. The council has been finishing the fencing, pedestrian walkway and signage this week, following which skips can be moved back onto the site.

Operational vehicles will now be separated from public vehicles, alleviating issues with queuing on Halifax Road and means the site can stay open during skip exchanges, where previously it had to close for safety reasons. Site opening times are, in winter, Mondays to Saturdays 8am to 4pm and Sundays 10 am to 4pm, and, in summer, Mondays to Saturdays 8am to 5pm and Sundays 9am to 4pm.

The delay in re-opening the Eastwood household recycling centre had faced criticism from Calder ward Coun Janet Battye.

Coun Battye was angered it had not opened in early January as planned and felt alternative arrangements put in place while the tip was closed from last September were inadequate.

She was pleased a re-opening date had been given. “it’s good news and I want to see it happen - though I saw them having a site meeting and can’t see why they can’t open it now,” she said earlier this week.

Coun Barry Collins said the site was the fourth of Calderdale Council’s to be refurbished to a very high standard.

“It has been a challenge, as it was extremely busy and popular with recyclers, but also furthest away from alternative sites. We’ve had extra provision in place throughout the closure period. We’ve also been taking an additional two bags of refuse each fortnight to try to help residents while the site has been closed. We’d like to thank residents for their patience during the closure. The new layout places greater emphasis on recycling, and I hope that residents continue to recycle as much as they can,” he said.
