Residents' fury as huge trucks use their street

Anne Honor, Stephen and Margaret Drake, residents of Myrtle Terrace, Sowerby Bridge, have been gathering a petition to stop HGV's using their narrow street.

Now those living on Myrtle Terrace, Sowerby Bridge, want to put the spotlight on the issue by petitioning Calderdale Council.

The petition, organised by Anne Honour, 78, says: “We believe that the roads are unsuitable to accommodate the amount and size of transportation using the road and it is not clear what is being transported.

“Residents fear for their safety and anticipate that if one of these vehicles should crash into the wall or a person, whilst trying to manoeuvre the junctions, then it will cause serious damage to properties and potentially residents living in the area.

Residents of Myrtle Terrace, Sowerby Bridge, have been gathering a petition to stop HGV's using their narrow street.

“There are many residential properties on this terrace and the streets leading off Myrtlerace, where children live and there is an infant school on the next street.

“It is now felt unsafe, due to the size and amount of traffic being used for deliveries.”

It goes on to say the road was not built for that kind of traffic and damage has already been caused.

The petition, signed by 43 people, calls on Calderdale Council to stop large and heavy vehicles from using the street and look at alternative measures.

Ian Hughes, Calderdale Council’s head of democratic and partnership services, said: “We welcome petitions and recognise they are one way that people can let us know their concerns.”

“Petitions with 2,000 or more signatures will be debated at the next full council meeting, those with 500 or more but less than 2,000 will be referred to the appropriate scrutiny panel, and petitions with less than 500 signatures will be considered by the relevant council service.”
