Ripponden church pays a stunning tribute with poppies

A moving tribute was paid to the lives lost in the First World War at St Bartholomew's Church in Ripponden, where a 12 foot by 43 foot net containing thousands of poppies was suspended from the bell tower as part of their special service.

Christine Clayton, from the events committee at the church, said: “We had the most fantastic day. Hundreds and hundreds turned out to see this, the weather was fantastic and the poppies going up worked so well.

“The church inside looks wonderful. Everyone just loved it, it was very moving too.

“The Deputy Lord Lieutenant read The Flanders Field poem when the poppies went up, The Mayor of Calderdale and the Chairman of Ripponden Council both said a few words about how delighted they where to be there and how wonderful and moving it was.

“Reverand Carol Hirst led the service and read the poem We Shall Remember Them. The bugler played at the start and the finish.

“We had a gentleman from British Legion there, and also members of Scouts and Cubs. It was so good to see the Scouts and Cubs being there at their young age respecting what happened in World War One.

“A big thank you to all who helped with this and also to all the public who turned out to see it.”

The church will be open on the following days for people to look at the memorabilia exhibition and see the poppies hung outside: Saturday, November 3, 10am to 2pm, Sunday, November 4, 11am to 2pm, Wednesday, November 7, 1pm to 3pm, Sunday, November 11, after the morning Remembrance Service.
