School charity walk raises over £2,000 for cystic fibrosis

A primary school has completed a sponsored walk to help a student with cystic fibrosis purchase life changing equipment.

St Malachy’s Catholic Primary School organised the charity event last month to help meet the £8,000 needed for Aaron Lindsey to get a respiratory vest.

Teaching assistant Emma Luczkiewicz said: “We are very pleased with the response, we wanted to do something for one of our own and we have managed to raise £2,134.

“Now we have been able to raise awareness of the condition and how important it is for him to get the vest, thank you so much to the parents for getting on board.”

Aaron was born in May 2008, although healthy at the time he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at just 26 days old.

Sticking to a healthy regime, regular physiotherapy and inhalers Aaron continues to fight on.

However people with the disease are likely to become weaker as they become holder, over the last 12 to 24 months Aaron’s lung capacity has begun to drop as low as 39 percent.

The vest would offer him relief, vibrating his chest to loosen and thin build up of mucus.

Learning of the cost the school organised the walk, including children from all age groups of the school and parents.

Together they walked from the school to Beechwood Park, around its edges and back to the school.

Today the school will be enjoying the presentation of a cheque for the funds by the Mayor of Halifax, Michael Savage.

Fund raising continues and donations are still needed for Aaron to get his vest.
