School life: Successful Super Learning Day at Brighouse High

Thursday 20 October was the first Super Learning Day of the school year at Brighouse High. The normal timetable was collapsed for the day and pupils in all year groups were involved in day long activities designed to promote key personal and social skills, confidence and awareness.

Highlights of the day included an inspirational and motivational talk to Year 11 students delivered by Richard McCann. Richard is the son of one of the victims of the Yorkshire Ripper and his story of triumph over adversity is truly inspiring. His ‘I Can’ message is one which Brighouse High hopes will spur on Year 11s as they approach the important exam period. Following the talk year 11 undertook a range of study skills and relaxation exercises designed to help them approach the mocks and exams in the right frame of mind.

Year 10 tackled the theme of emotional and wellbeing with awareness raising sessions on a range of issues including self-harm, mental health and healthy body image.

It was great to invite ex-students back into the school to support the work taking place on careers and personal development. The students, now young adults, were able to share their experiences of careers in the RNLI or academic study and to act as role models for the Year 9 students.

Year 8 followed an Enterprise theme and engaged in a challenge to design a newride for a theme park. The students developed key skills of co-operation, team work, time management and presenting with confidence and came up with some truly amazing ideas.

Year 7’s day was devoted to the theme of safety; to raising awareness of a range of health and safety issues especially road safety. The pupils had the chance to demonstrate their creative talents by designing posters and adverts to raise awareness of others.

Year 12 and 13 were also involved in the super learning them with work centred around careers and personal development. We were grateful for the support of Martin Haigh of Lattitude 7 for the innovative and thought provoking workshops he set up for the students
